DOVER STREET MARKET, THE CONCEPT STORE OPENED BY REI KAWAKUBO AND ADRIAN JOFF

The Dover Street Market is an iconic concept store opened by Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe in 2004. A reference point for the fashion scene, it has revolutionized the very concept of a luxury store. The first Dover Street Market opened on the street of the same name in the Mayfair district of London, but after twelve years, in 2016, it moved to Haydemarket, in the historic building that was the headquarters of Burberry for over a hundred years.

The idea was inspired by Kensington Market in London, which doesn’t exist anymore, a three-storey bazaar, a hub for fashion linked to the subcultures of the 1960s. The style of the store is unmistakable, with raw concrete floors and industrial aesthetics, and works of art and installations that make the shopping experience unique. And every six months what is called “Tachiagari”, which means “beginning”, takes place, a renewal of the exhibition spaces and collections, the store closes for a few days and reopens with a new look.

Every season artists are invited to create spaces and unique pop-ups, art installations that host the new collections.  In addition to the Comme des Garçon lines, the Dover Syteet Market hosts important names that have made the history of fashion. Including, young emerging brands, immersed in what the founder herself defines as “Beautiful Chaos”. From Rick Owens, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Celine, Gucci to Palace, Nike, Maison Margiela.

Other Dover Street markets opened around the world. The first one opened in 2006 in the Ginza district (Tokyo), followed by Beijing, Singapore and New York.

In 2013 the London store was classified as the 2nd best store in the world by Complex.

On the 29th of November 2019 the greatest collaboration in the market was released.
