Derek Lam is an American fashion designer, born in San Francisco, to a mother originally from Hong Kong and a father of Chinese origins. Fashion is a family matter, as his parents run a tailor’s shop and his grandparents own a wedding dress shop.

After undertaking a course of study in the economic field, Lam changed school and graduated from the Parsons School of Design in 1990. He started as an assistant for Michael Kors and he worked with the stylist for four years. He then moved to Hong Kong to collaborate with a large-scale retail brand, later returning to New York as vice president of the Kors line.

In 2003 he launched his own clothing label to which he also added a line of shoes and jewelry. However, success came the following year when, in 2004, he launched the S/S 2004 collection, which received a nomination for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.

In 2009 he opened his first store in New York, in the SoHo district. The shop was designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

In 2006 Derek Lam began working for Tod’s, who also owns the designer’s shoe and bag production license. The collaboration ended in 2012.

Known for feminine silhouettes, for the use of silk, for wide-leg wool trousers and cashmere coats. Moreover Derek Lam’s creations are also loved by stars like Rihanna, Demi Moore, Rachel Bilson and Jessica Alba.

In 2020 the Derek Lam brand was bought by Public Clothing Company and the designer remained the creative director of the included brand, Derek Lam 10 Crosby.
