Jules François Crahay

Crahay, Jules François

Jules François Crahay (1919 – 1988) is a French fashion designer of Belgian origins, whose first collection dates from 1959.

The beginning

After an apprenticeship in Liège, in his mother’s atelier, he moved to Paris. In 1947, after a period in the atelier of Jane Regny, he joined Nina Ricci and became the first designer of prêt-à-porter. In 1963 he went to Lanvin, replacing Castillo. Crahay doesn’t impose his styles, even the most severe ones, giving the women he dresses the freedom to improvise and recreate his fluttering draping, the cuts on the bias, and the knotted fabrics. Even his luxury minimalism of the 1970s was sweet and feminine. He left the maison in 1984 and retired. He would design three more prêt-à-porter collections for Itokin.
