Orta

Lucy Orta(1966). Textile designer. Born in Birmingham, England, she lives in Paris, where she has been producing loungewear since 1991, using high-tech fabrics printed with slogans, symbols, and signs taken from a personal archive assembled with her husband, the Argentine artist Jorge Orta. She creates constructions for the body, with easy to assemble light carbon-fiber frames that work with zips, Velcro, and pockets. Lucy was inspired to produce a mini “existential” collection by her involvement in a Staff International project with artists using clothes as a means of expression. She created “message-clothes” for her Spring-Summer 2000 Collection, printed with quotations from Martin Luther King and Aung San Sun Kyi (both Nobel Peace Prize winners), and the architect-philosopher Paul Virilio.
