Nishijin Textile Museum

Kyoto, Japan. A permanent exhibition in the Nishijin Textile Center, opened in 1976. It traces the story of a particular type of silk brocade that is typical of Nishijin, a neighborhood in Kyoto. The exhibition is chronologically presented, from the origins of the fabric in 500 AD, through Chinese and, later, European influences, with the arrival of Jacquard looms, up until the creation of a workers’ association in 1883. Exhibitions, demonstrations and runway shows are organized to keep this important local tradition alive.
