The partnership with Schiaparelli

Serge Lepage (1936) is a French fashion designer. In 1973, four years after the death of Elsa Schiaparelli, he was appointed Creative Director of Schiaparelli, in order to revamp the brand: new owner Guido Sassoli de Bianchi wanted so.

The fashion house Schiaparelli decided not to appoint a new fashion designer, but to start a partnership with Lepage: the first collection created together was shown in January 1977 and the last one, two years after, in January 1979. Overall, there were five haute couture collections and at least two ready-to-wear collections, called ‘atelier’ collections.

In that season, a dress designed by the fashion designer made news and stir: it was embroidered with 512 real diamonds and its esteemed value was 1,5 million dollars, so it had to be escorted by the police. The Maison Lepage, which had existed for 14 years (its foundation was in 1963), was closed between 1973 and 1979: the Creative Direction at Schiaparelli absorbed its founder, but consecrated him in the fashion world, representing the peak of his career.
