Mario (1971). Italian photographer. From Naples, at the age of 10, he moved with his family, first to Washington and then New York, where he now lives and works. After studying at the School of Visual Art, which he attended while working as a designer at his mother’s graphic agency, he discovered photography at the age of 17. He entered the fashion world in 1989 as a model and three years later began his photographic career with Calvin Klein who commissioned him to do a campaign for perfume and fashion. His work is published in i-D, The Face, Arena, Interview, Harper’s Bazaar (with whom he signed a year-long contract in 1992) and the French, Italian, and English editions of Vogue. He has also done campaigns for important designers, such as Joop, Dolce & Gabbana, Iceberg, GAP, and CK Obsession, and he continues to collaborate with Calvin Klein. He caused a stir when one of his photographs for a 2002 Ungaro advertisement showed a white dog sensuously licking the foot of a blonde model. He has shown in various exhibitions in New York, Paris, and London. In 2002 Steidt published his book The Machine, which he dedicated to his photographer brother Davide (see above entry) who, as a sufferer of thalassemia, was often linked up to medical machinery.
