THE DEBUT IN FASHION JOURNALISM

Simone Marchetti moved the first steps in the publishing world with Alessandro Calascibetta, director of Style Magazine Italia. Thanks to Calascibetta’s support, Marchetti wrote his first article for the magazine Uomo. His passion for writing, said Marchetti, was born much earlier, during the experience at communication agencies.

The effective entry into the world of fashion publishing took place with Donna Moderna, under the direction of Patrizia Avoledo and Cipriana Dall’Orto. There, Simone Marchetti dedicated himself to writing captions for the photo shoots. According to the journalist, Donna Moderna was an intense period of training, which will accompany him throughout his career.

THE EXPERIENCE AT VELVET, THE FOCUS ON THE DIGITAL WORLD

In 2006 Simone Marchetti arrived at Velvet, directed at the time by Michela Gattermayer. At Velvet, he began to take an interest in the new faces of fashion, fashion bloggers, and everything that revolves around the digital world. He interviewed Scott Schuman, one of the pioneers of the sector.

His interest in new communication tools and new digital programs allowed him to always stay one step ahead, so much so that in the editorial office he was called the nickname “sapientino” (“know-it-all”).

In 2009 Simone Marchetti left Velvet. Later he participated in the launch of D di Repubblica and then became the fashion signature of the newspaper La Repubblica. He covered the role of fashion editor for the following 12 years. He wrote for The Huffington Post and curated Backstage, the column on business and finance.

During his experience with Backstage, the journalist stumbled on the delivery deadline, and the editor-in-chief Luigi Gia suspended him for a month. “I acted in that way, certainly not out of dislike or anything,” he told Lettera43 “Simone is a champion, the delay was perhaps the last remaining flaw. Now I’m curious to know how he will behave in his new role”, said Gia referring to Marchetti’s new assignment with Vanity Fair.

JUDGE AT MIX & MATCH

In 2018 the journalist became the judge of Mix&Match – Il guardaroba delle meraviglie, the program conducted by Ludovica Commello on Sky Uno.

Marchetti defined his experience at Mix& Match as another piece of the narrative puzzle that is fashion. “[…] The commitment to social media, primarily on Instagram, an exceptional platform for conveying content and stories”, he told SkyTG24, “Well, all this is my job as a journalist: a sort of large network, living and diversified, which has only one goal, that is to explain and tell how fashion is not just about clothes but a sector of excellence, of craftsmanship, of trades, of culture, a container of meanings that has a lot to say about us, about our history, about our present and very, very often also about our future”.

THE ARRIVAL AT VANITY FAIR ITALIA

Vanity Fair Italia, October 2020

At the end of the year, the official communication about his new assignment as director of Vanity Fair Italia, the weekly magazine of the Condé Nast group arrived. Marchetti took over the management of the magazine in early 2019, making considerable changes, in terms of aesthetics and content. As he said to FS News, the editorial revolution is necessary if you want to conquer the reader.

Marchetti did so by structuring the magazine as an organic network, in which the traditional editorial world and the digital one do not exclude each other but they communicate: “[…I understood that it was not about choosing a field, but thinking about business more organically. This is a fruitful and hard time, a great cultural revolution is taking place. But we must preserve quality”.
