Samugheo

Chiara. The pseudonym of Chiara Paparella (1935). A photographer born in Bari (Italy), she started out in the 1950s. She was the first to use pictures as a form of journalism, with reportages on the south of Italy and fashion, socio-political surveys for Cinema Nuovo and above all for the weekly Tempo during the 25 years it was under the editorship of Arturo Tofanelli. She also produced reports on the stars and leading figures in cinema and entertainment with countless portrait covers. She photographed Gina Lollobrigida wearing Chanel and Valentino, Sofia Loren wearing Schuberth, Catherine Spaak wearing Capucci, and Rosanna Schiaffino wearing German Marucelli and Missoni. Samugheo (she changed her surname at the suggestion of Pasquale Prunas, journalist, art director, editor and lifelong partner) has shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, at the Venice Biennale (presented by Paolo Portoghesi), at the Cannes Festival, and at Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana. Some of her publications are Carnaval, Costumi di Sardegna, Al Cinema con le stelle, Lucca e la Lucchesia, and Il reale e l’effimero.
