Mondi

German ready-made womenswear company. It was founded in Munich in 1967 with a knitwear line designed by the trio Margaretha Ley, Herwing Zahm, and Otto Bruestle. The company, which was acquired in 1993 by Investcorp, aims to export European luxury goods to the American market. In Germany, it produces women’s clothing in four different lines: Collection, Sport, Classic, and Gala, respectively divided into daywear, sportswear, classic clothing and eveningwear. Sold in 65 different countries, the clothes are designed in New York and Bavaria by the American designer Maggie Norris, who joined Mondi in 1998 after 14 years as part of the Ralph Lauren team. 1999 was an annus horribilis for Mondi. After risking bankruptcy, it passed into the hands of Fehmi Chama. The production and commercialisation licenses were sold to the Gilmar di Cattolica Group. In November, the situation returned to normal with the announcement of Jeetoh Peng as the head designer, who collaborated with Vera Schaal on the production of knitwear.
&Quad;2000, March. The partnership between Gilmar and Mondi came to an end. In August the first collection of sportswear was presented. Fehmi Chama entrusted the Fall-Winter 2001-2002 line to two of the team’s designers. Annette Vogt took over prêt-à-porter and Michaela Burger knitwear.
&Quad;2001, May. Imaginex of Hong Kong acquired the distribution rights for menswear for the Asian market. The aim was to increase the menswear own-brand Mondi Uomo stores to 50 by 2004, with particular focus on Italy, where the line is produced by Imaginex.
