merola

Artisanal firm producing gloves, founded in Naples by Leopoldo and Giuseppe Merola in 1878. After their initial success, the brothers decided in 1885 to open a store in Rome at 143Via del Corso. Up until the end of the 1920s the company, which owns a factory and a tanning works, enjoyed a period of great prosperity. After the difficulties due to the period of self-sufficiency and the war, the company experienced a new phase of great expansion after World War II. Today, the grandson of Leopoldo, Alberto, continues to run the family firm. Audrey Hepburn in Vacanze Romane (1953) and Kate Winslet in Titanic (1997) both wore Merola gloves. Examples of the 20,000 pairs produced every year have found their way into the wardrobes of all the European royal families. They are sold at Harrods in London, Bergdorf Goodman in New York, in Brioni shops around the world and in Magli stores in Italy. Merola made gloves for the films The Patriot, with Mel Gibson, Gangs of New York by Scorsese, and those worn by Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain.
