Meatpacking District An area in New York, situated on the West Side of Manhattan, between the 17th and 12th Streets, behind Chelsea. Once it was a commercial meatpacking district, but today only about 30 of the original 127 meatpackers have survived. The rest of the area, mainly made up of lofts and exhibition spaces, is occupied by designers, art galleries and fashionable bars, as part of the transformation of the area into one of the most vibrant and trendy parts of New York. Alexander McQueen was the first star in the fashion firmament to open a store in what many people consider to be the “new Soho.” The next to follow in his footsteps were Stella McCartney, Rubin Chapelle, the French-Moroccan designer Yigal Azrouel, the Brazilian Carlos Miele, the clothing and accessories shops Dernier Cri and Scoop, the jewelers Laura Mady’s and the French household goods shop Bodum.
