McDowell Colin. English journalist and writer. Passionate about the world of fashion and an expert in all its secrets. He was once a designer himself for 8 years in Italy, with Pino Lancetti and Laura Biagiotti. He teaches at the Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts in London and writes for various magazines and newspapers, including The Guardian. Among the books he has written, 100 Years of Royal Style is dedicated to the queens of England, their taste and style in clothes from the Victorian period to the present. Everywoman’s Guide to Looking Good is, instead, a collection of suggestions on how to look truly elegant. His Directory of Twentieth Century Fashion, a more serious and complex work, published in 1984, elaborated his theories on certain phenomena in the history of fashion. In his view, each change brought about with a new generation is the fruit of political and social conflicts, which McDowell even defines as “anarchical and subversive.”
