Mateldi

Filiberto (1885-1942). Painter, caricaturist and illustrator.

 

Mateldi After a brief period as an actor in Rome, where he was born, from the beginning of the 1920s he drew for about 30 different periodicals, including Il giornalino della Domenica, Lidel, Il Balilla, and Il Secolo XX. He also illustrated about 40 books with an elaborate and vigorously elegant style.

With Gustavino he was the author of the drawings for the 14 volumes of La Scala d’Oro, a series of books for children from the 1930s, and of the unsettling illustrations for The Golden Ass by Apuleius. As a fashion illustrator, he worked for Illustrazione Italiana in 1933. His images of curvy women bordered on caricatures. He was married to the famous illustrator Brunetta.
