Macy’s

An American chain of department stores. It was declared bankrupt at the beginning of the 1990s but was acquired by Federated Department Stores Inc. in 1994. Its oldest and most famous store is located on 34th Street in Manhattan, where it takes up an entire block and is considered one of the most important shopping emporiums in the world. Founded in 1858 by R.W. Macy, ever since 1924 the New York store has organized a grand parade through the streets of Manhattan on Thanksgiving Day, in order to mark the beginning of the Christmas shopping period. Macy’s has also recently inaugurated a Benefit Shopping Day, held in Fall, when a percentage of the day’s takings are donated to about sixty charitable organizations.
&Quad;1998. Macy’s by Mail Catalog was created to enable mail-order shopping.
&Quad;2000. The first Macy’s store outside North America was opened in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
&Quad;2003, August. The San Francisco store presented Oscar De La Renta’s new collection of household accessories inspired by the decor of his three houses: one with exotic interiors in the Dominican Republic, one in urban New York and the third in the countryside of Connecticut.
