Larionov Michail (1881-1964). Painter, choreographer and costume designer, a leading figure in the Russian avant-garde. At the Moscow school of painting, sculpting and architecture he met Natalia Gontcharova, whom he married and with whom he formed the group The Blue Rose and magazine The Golden Fleece. He was the inventor of a primitivist style and the Futurist simultaneism. In 1913 he moved to Paris where he worked with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, designing costumes that, notwithstanding their extreme avant-garde nature, influenced French fashions. He wrote the manifesto Why we paint our faces in which he theorized the possibility to integrating art and life through painting the body.
