Frissel

Tony (1907-1988). American photographer, born in New York. She was among the first to remove the academic and glossy tone from the fashion pictures in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, using girls with a casual and not too solemn look instead. She was also the first woman to join the staff of Sports Illustrated and to take photos of boxing matches, races, and champions. She would take photos with a small format camera, thus breaking the tradition, and the obligation, imposed by Condé Nast in favor of the large format. After World War II, she gradually lost interest in fashion, and would eventually abandon it completely to devote herself to portraits and photo-reportage.
