DAIDO MORIYAMA, PHOTOGRAPHER AMONG THE MAJOR EXPONENTS OF JAPANESE STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Instant Street PhotographyInstant Street Photography

Identified as one of the leading exponents in the field of Japanese street photography, Daido Moriyama was born in Osaka in 1938. Subsequently, in 1961, he moved to Tokyo after completing his photography studies and it was during this period that his skill to catch the moment started to be noticed.

Launched immediately against the mere documentary reproduction prevailing in that period, Moriyama stands out for his strong narrativity and pathos. The hegemonic topic is the collapse of post-war Japanese society, inserted in the urban context. His black and white can be summarized in the Sakka Japanese word, used to identify something broken, scratched. With a lifetime of career behind him, his works have been exhibited in some of the most illustrious museums in the world, such as the MOMA in San Francisco and the Metropolitan in New York.
