Twin Set

An English term used to indicate, since the 1930s, two knitwear items, coordinated in both color and yarn. The first was usually a sleeveless sweater shirt, the second a little over sweater, with buttons and buttonholes. The twin set marked a development toward the elegance of knitwear; it also appeared in the role of complementary item, in thin combed wools, worked in satin knit, and later in cashmere, always in natural shades. It returned to fashion in the 1960s, now in colors, usually pastels, with ornamental knits and jacquard patterns, especially in the outer sweater. Especially renowned were the pure cashmere twin sets of Marella Agnelli.
