Piattelli

Bruno (1927). Designer from Rome. After studying law, he began working at his father’s tailoring shop which until then had been aimed at a private international clientele. In the 1960s he started designing for big manufacturers, winning contracts with Ellesse, Lebole, and Lanerossi. In 1969 the first Piattelli sales points were opened in department stores like Barney’s in New York and Takashiyama in Tokyo, and Alitalia commissioned him to design the uniforms for their ground staff. He did a lot of work for cinema and theater. He designed the white linen suit worn by Marcello Mastroianni in the musical Ciao Rudy, and he made nearly all the star’s costumes during his long career. He also made clothes for Manfredi, Tognazzi, and Nero, and he has had many foreign clients like Michael Caine and Orson Welles. He also designed women’s fashion and dressed the actresses Virna Lisi, Mireille Darc, and Gina Lollobrigida. He produced a range of bed-linen and furnishing fabrics in the 1970s. He was one of the advisors to Francesco Rutelli, mayor of Rome, from 1993 to 2001.
