Museum of Costume

Museum of Costume 1963 Witness to the great history of fashion

The Museum of Costume is located in Bath, founded in 1963, houses a rich collection of period and modern clothing with an orientation towards what is fashionable

Bath, Great Britain. Museum of Costume Housed in the Assembly Rooms, the Georgian architectural jewel made famous by the novels of Jane Austen. The museum was founded in 1963 with the donation of the collection that belonged to dress historian Doris Langley. It now holds more than 20,000 items and accessories for men, women, and children. The oldest pieces date from 1500. The collections have always reflected leading fashion trends, both historic and contemporary. Every year the museum sends a fashion expert to choose the outfit which they feel best represents new fashions. The Fashion Research Centre is part of the museum, but housed outside the Assembly Rooms in a nearby house. It is open to scholars and the public, and includes a specialist library, collections of magazines, photographs, albums, and a collection of dress, accessories and textiles dating from the 18th to the 20th centuries, all of which are available for consultation.
