Müncher Stadtmuseum is the museum that Munich has dedicated to fashion. Through 10 thousand dresses and more than 40 thousand accessories it synthesizes the path of fashion from ‘700 to the present day. It periodically organizes themed exhibitions that give rise to meetings and seminars.

The fashion and fabric collection was born from purchases and donations to the Munich Stadtmuseum since its foundation in 1888. It included clothes and accessories of each type, from everyday clothes to high fashion, from the beginning of the 18th century to our days. The inventory contains about 60,000 items.

The “fabrics” area includes crafts such as embroidery, home textiles and samplers. Clothing is divided into women’s, men’s and children’s clothing. All categories are available in the fashion collection: from haute couture, model clothing, ready to wear fashion, boutique fashion, artist fashion and self-made fashion. Clothing is also differentiated based on “occasions”: for example, clothing for the home, clothing for the day, evening and holidays, weddings, free time, traditional costumes, carnival and times of need.

MÜNCHER STADTMUSEUM, THE “FASHION MUSEUM”

In the exhibitions previously exhibited by the fashion / fabric collection, formerly known as the “fashion museum”, the topic ranges from the development of certain items of clothing (such as hats, wedding dresses, children’s clothing) in the last two centuries to the presentation of fashion from individual eras, for example war and post-war fashion, the roaring twenties and fifties, up to the presentation of individual accessories as in the exhibition “2000 hats” (2000). The work of individual couturiers also takes up space. Among others, the work of Werner Wunderlich, Antonio Lopez and Cristobal Balenciaga was awarded. There are also several exhibitions aimed at the link between fashion and art.
