MASSIMO RUSSO (1965) IS AN ITALIAN JOURNALIST SPECIALIZED IN NEW MEDIA AND DIGITAL JOURNALISM
Massimo Russo was born in Venice in 1965. He studied economics at Ca ‘ Foscari University in Venice and in 1990 he obtained a master’s degree at Luiss Guido Carli in Journalism and Mass Media. After completing his studies, before landing on the web, he worked for many magazines for ten years, holding various positions. In fact he started as a reporter for Il Mattino di Padova.
As a network and new technologies expert, innovation is his watchword. In 1999 he participated in the Kataweb foundation, a multimedia platform owned by the Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso which includes different kinds of digital content. After the years at L’Espresso, Massimo Russo arrived at Condè Nast. Here he was entrusted with the management of Wired Italia from 2013 to 2015. Condè Nast’s parenthesis will be followed by the role of co-director of the Italian newspaper La Stampa alongside Maurizio Molinari.
From 2014 to 2018, Russo used his journalistic and digital skills to draft the Charter of Internet Rights, after being nominated as a member of the Parliamentary Commission.
In 2016, Russo returned to the historic L’Espresso Group, which became the GEDI Group following the merger of the Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso and Itedi. This time he took on the role of general manager of the digital division.
MASSIMO RUSSO AT HEARST
On the 29th of March 2019 he joined the Herst Group first as Managing Director Content & Consumer Experience Italy and Chief Product Officer Hearst Europe and then as director of Esquire magazine, launched in Italy four years earlier. With Massimo Russo, the Hearst Italia publishing house recorded an 82% growth in the digital sector, more than 26 million visitors on their web platforms.
He has also been the director of Elle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan since July 2021.
He wrote the following books on digital media: Eretici Digitali (2009), Il Design al tempo di internet e delle stampanti 3D (2015), Attacco ai pirati – L’affondamento di Hacking Team. Tutti i segreti del datagate italiano (2015) e Statosauri – Guida alla democrazia nell’epoca delle piattaforme (2021).
