Mare Moda Capri

In 1961 the newspaper contest Moda e Turismo in Italia — instigated by municipal corporations, businesses, and regional associations — proposed holding a series of fashion events in some of the most picturesque areas of Italy, such as Capri. The suggestion was well-received and the first edition of what was to become an exemplary event took place in September 1967 with the support of two famous citizens of Capri by adoption, Emilio Pucci and Livio de Simone. It was organized by Rudi Crespi and Giorgio Pavone, assisted by Franco Savorelli di Lauriano. Angelo Sacchetti was later to liaise with the press and take care of public relations. Pasquale Acampora, the general secretary of Sergio Capece Minutolo, was elected as the president of Mare Moda Capri. Exhibitions, conferences, debates, ad hoc presentations of new books, competitions, “International Fashion Encounters” (dedicated to one or two different countries, with catwalk shows) were all satellite events to the main shows, held at the Certosa, Marina Piccola, Anacapri and in the Quisisina theatre. The catwalk show was accompanied by a jury-awarded prize, called the Tiberio (made of gold and silver), that has been awarded in the past to, among others, Pucci, Geinrech, Cardin, Rabanne, Gucci, Valentino, De la Renta, Givenchy, Gianni Bulgari, Cerruti, Lanerie, Agnona, Sarli, De Simone, Mila Schön, Missoni, Krizia and Roberta di Camerino. Extravagance, true creativity, corals and turquoises, chains and straw, topless and beachwear, absolute elegance and some of the first examples of street fashion, are alternated in an extraordinary mix. The event continued until 1978.
