Kelly

A bag created last century, at the same time as the maison Hermès was founded, as a saddle-bag for horse-riders during hunting. But it was only in 1930 that the Parisian house decided to make it a woman’s bag by making it substantially smaller. During the 1950s this large bag, characterized by its unmistakable “lock” fastener, was one of the maison’s great successes. In 1955 it was publicized by the woman whose name made it famous: Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, who was pregnant with her first daughter, Caroline, used this bag to hide her pregnancy from photographers. Splashed across every magazine, from that moment on the bag became the “Kelly.” Made traditionally in black, brown, blue and bordeaux, during the 1980s the Kelly bag started to be manufactured in brighter colors, such as yellow, red, emerald green and zephyr blue. Nowadays it is available in three models — hard, soft and very soft — and in different skins, and can be requested with or without a strap.
