Ivy League

Style of clothing associated with a conservative American undergraduate dress code, named after a group of prestigious American East Coast colleges including Harvard, Princeton and Yale. Ivy League is more commonly used to speak of men’s fashions than women’s; the women’s equivalent is more commonly called “preppy.” The boys’ look features button-down white shirts and narrow striped ties (typically from Brooks Brothers, the New York haberdasher), worn with grey flannel suits, casual khaki trousers, and Oxford shoes. When applied to women’s fashions, the style usually indicates pearl necklaces and cashmere twin-sets, navy wool or camel hair coats and navy low-heeled pumps.
