Halsman

Philippe (1906-1979). Latvian photographer who became an American citizen in 1949. After moving first to Germany and then to Paris, he opened a firm specialized in portraiture and fashion photography for Vogue, Vu, and Voilà. In 1940 he moved to the USA where he portrayed famous personalities (Einstein, Churchill, and Marilyn Monroe) and worked as a freelancer for Time and Life, for which he created more than 100 covers, and other magazines. He collaborated with famous artists such as Salvador DalÕ, by whose surrealism he was openly inspired and to whom he supplied photos that were used by the Spanish painter in several projects. His most renowned book is Famous Jumps, a compliation of the images of celebrated people who had jumped in front of his camera.
