Gherardi

Piero (1909-1971). A costume and set designer expert in “spellbound” atmospheres, he was perfectly in tune with the films of Federico Fellini. An architect and interior decorator, he became interested in cinema with Mario Soldati (Eugenia Grandet, Daniele Cortis). He later worked on the colossal War and Peace by King Vidor. His first collaboration with Fellini was on Nights of Cabiria, where his unrealistic and creative genius was clearly expressed. After Pontecorvo’s film Kapò, he dressed Fellini’s universe and his actresses with unforgettable shapes and articles of clothing which, in some way, had an influence on fashion. He chose the costumes and the sets for La Dolce Vita and created dreamy atmospheres for 8-1/2. He received an Oscar for each movie. The apotheosis was reached with Giulietta of the Spirits, which was characterized by color: between dreams and colored veils, the costume and set designer gave life to Fellini’s most radical fantasies. Gherardi’s creativity inclined also toward the grotesque, manifesting itself in the surreal costumes of Mario Monicelli’s Armata Brancaleone.
