Fabrizio Ferri (born 1952), Italian photographer

Fabrizio Ferri was born into a family of intellectuals of the Roman historical left. Classical studies, passionate about music, at the age of 19 he approached photography by chance, with the portrait of a father and a daughter caught during a street demonstration and published by the newspaper Paese Sera, as a photo-symbol. The experience fascinates him: after working as a costume and politics reporter for L’Espresso, Il Messaggero, L’Unità, he switched to fashion photography, immediately starting to collaborate with the major Italian newspapers, Linea Italiana, Vogue and later, exclusively, for Donna and Mondo Uomo.

His fashion photos are neither graceful nor artificial. They can be defined as sincere portraits of women whose soul seems to want to lay bare, and in which the dress is seen as a complement to the personality. Images different from those in vogue in the early 80s. In fact, they attract for the mixture of sensuality, simplicity, intensity. These factors allow him to quickly establish himself as one of the most interesting and sought-after Italian photographers of the new generation. Open, curious, tireless, enthusiastic, dragging, in the wake of the sudden success, he became an entrepreneur, musician, writer, director.

The Era of Superstudio

In 1984, with Flavio Lucchini, he transformed a series of warehouses of a goods warehouse at the Porta Genova station in Milan into Superstudio, the largest European complex (7 thousand square meters) of photographic studios and into an important reference point for fashion photography. In ’88 the company split into Superstudio 13 and Industria Superstudio. In the following years, other initiatives such as Industria Superstudio Overseas started. It is 5 thousand square meters of studios in Greenwich in New York. In addition, the Industria clothing line and a school linked to plurisensoriality, the University of the Image, are created.
