Benda

Benda is the pseudonym of Georges Kugelmann, a French costume designer. His name is linked to several masterpieces of French film as the creator creating magnificent costumes for historical movies and clothes for films set in modern times. At the end of the 1930s he abandoned international theater, where he had a solid reputation, in order to work in films. His knowledge of the way people dressed in the past was of great help when he designed the costumes for Jacques Fayder’s Carnival in Flanders, taking inspiration from the Flemish painters of the 1600s. One also remembers NÂtre Dame de Paris, from Hugo’s novel. He designed the costumes for almost all of Sacha Guitry’s films, and for René Clair’s Le Million.
