Topless

A term, used in many languages besides English to refer to a swimsuit missing the top part. The topless, designed in California by Gernreich, is basically nothing more than a high-waisted pair of shorts from which two slender straps run up, crossing over the breast and back. In the midst of the popularity of the miniskirt, at the dawn of the era of unisex fashion, the topless was a protest garment, often stigmatized or forbidden. But it soon exhausted its value, making way for extremely daring bikinis. Playing on the false dual bikini, the next development was in the 1970s, the creation of the young and impetuous manager of Robe di Kappa, Maurizio Vitale: the monokini, which even though it was presented as offering the possibility of buying different sizes of tops and bottoms, also meant that it was possible to do without a top.
