Tinling

Teddy Cuthbert Collingwood known as Teddy (1910-1990). Born in Eastbourne (Great Britain), he was famous as a fashion designer for women tennis players. In 1949, he became persona non grata at Wimbledon, when he designed for the American player Gertrude “Gussy” Moran a pair of underwear-shorts (later known as hot pants) which caused a scandal. From that time on, Tinling’s creations were worn for years by the best female tennis players, both on the field and in private life: Conolly, Bueno, King, Court, Goolagong, and less well known and more beautiful champions, such as the Italian Lea Pericoli, known as “La Divina,” who wore shorts with lace and feathers.
