Ravers

In times in which people subscribed to a system of exaggerated consumption, as the phenomenon of fashion-victims seems to indicate, the Ravers, though the label is quite generic, represented an important point of trend reversal. Between the winter of 1987 and the following summer, an intentionally anti-fashion style began to take root, in place of the elaborate styles that had been pursued up till then. Instead of a profusion of griffes, simple T-“shirts, hairdos with rollers, and the timid beginning of piercing, which began with the frequent habit of chipping teeth. Contributing to the phenomenon was an explosion of such events as raver-parties (often illegal), in industrial warehouses at first and later in the open air, and the development of wave of so-called Balearic music (a mixture of Acid House, Techno, Afro and Funk) offered in such discotheques as Amnesia, Glory’s, and the Space in Ibiza, at the time the peak of the Spanish Movida. It was inevitable that upon the return from the holidays there would be a desire to relive the atmosphere and the euphoria of that summer of 1988, generating a collective phenomenon that continues still, focused on both marathon dancing and apparel.
