Edinburgh. In 1985, a single costume collection was formed from the collections of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Museum, and the Charles Stewart Collection. It numbers more than 15,000 pieces, dating from the 18th century onwards. The emphasis is on local products, work and everyday clothing, rather than haute couture. Nevertheless, the museum owns examples from all the main English and continental fashion houses of the 20th century. Its library collects books and documents relating to fashion.
