Hubert

René (1899-1966). American costume designer of Swiss origin. His rapport with Gloria Swanson, who he dressed both for movies and for her private life, made him one of the most renowned costume designers in Hollywood. He started working at Paramount Pictures, then at Metro (where he designed costumes for Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford), and to Fox, where he worked on all of the most important productions of the 1940s and 1950s, including dramas, comedies, historical films, and westerns. He designed outfits for Marlene Dietrich, Joan Fontaine, Jennifer Jones, Marilyn Monroe, Maureen O’Hara, and Ingrid Bergman (Anastasia). He also contributed in a particular way to the success of Linda Darnell for whom he designed costumes for Forever Amber and My Darling Clementine, among other films.
