Daché

Lilly (1907-1989). French milliner. After an apprenticeship in Paris with Caroline Reboux, she worked exclusively in New York, opening an atelier in the late 1920s. Up until the 1960s, she was the spokeswoman for European fashion as far as women’s hats were concerned: she would buy hat models in Paris and then adjust them according to American taste. In the meantime, she would design her own Collections, looking for inspiration in the hats of far-off African and Asian cultures. She also provided hats for Betty Grable, Marlene Dietrich, and Jacqueline Kennedy. She retired in 1969. She published the books Talking Through My Hat (1946) and Lilly Daché’s Glamour Book (1956).
