Costume Collection and Study Center

Norwich, England. This Collection of clothing and accessories is part of the Strangers’ Hall Museum located in the same 16th century building. Since the end of the 19th century, it has been collecting and keeping materials of local manufacture. Clothing is divided as follows: men’s, women’s, and children’s fashion, underwear, accessories, uniforms, and ecclesiastic garments. The oldest pieces are from the 16th century. Of particular importance is the Collection of shawls produced in Norwich during the 19th century, imitating the cashmere patterns of shawls imported from India. The fabric Collection includes lace, embroidery, patchwork, and sacred vestments. In addition, there are materials for the manufacture of textiles, both handmade and machine made. For several years the Collection has been housed in a detached building separate from the museum which can be visited by appointment, same as the specialized library.
