Bolero

Bolero is a short buttonless jacket that follows the line of the upper body, but hangs loose and does not reach the waist. During the 1860s it was called a Spanish jacket, after the popular Spanish costume. In the last decade of the 1800s, shortened in order to cover only the upper part of the bust, it appeared again, richly decorated, with embroidery, in transparent muslin the same shade as the dress underneath, or in fur for the Winter season. Again in a reduced size it was back in fashion during the late 1950s, used over sleeveless Summer dresses to cover arms and necklines. Worn in Summertime as a small jacket with short sleeves on top of evening dresses, and made of fur, almost always mink, during the 1960s the bolero took the place of the stole.
