Army surplus

Those who have never walked through a market selling second-hand goods, or army surplus merchandise, on the model of the one in Livorno will never know how important the surplus jackets, trousers, and heavy boots of the American military wardrobe are for a certain type of Italian man. With these rejects entire generatiions of students dressed themselves (before and after the Eskimo), as a form of protest, for comfort, as a political choice, and to be part of the crowd. More than a fashion, it was a declaration of intent, yet limited to the casual and to the street style of ’68.
