Arfango

Brand belonging to Calzolai e Pellettieri, a public company established in Florence in 1902, and known for its handmade products and its respect for a tradition that made Florence the capital of the art of working in leather. Arfango is celebrated all over the world for its aged leather and its process of tanning leather in a pit. This is a method which goes back to the 15^th century: after several operations of cleaning, preparing, and stripping, the hide is placed in very large tubs of water to which are added oak and mimosa bark extract. At the end of this procedure, the hide is greased, softened, and let dry for four months, then pulled in a way to make it smooth and even. Now it is ready to be polished by hand with seaweed and wax.
