Lodenfrey is company based in Munich founded in 1842

Lodenfrey was founded in Germany, in Munich by the young Johann Georg Frey.

COMPANY’S ORIGINS

The story started with Johann Georg Frey who started his production with just ten looms and started to make simple and smooth wool fabrics with incredible isothermal and waterproof properties. This material will be renamed “the loden”. In 1850 Johann Georg Frey opened his first shop in Marienplatz with an architectural novelty: the windows reach down to the floor.

In 1862 the first foundations of the company were laid in an extremely favourable position for the production of Loden wools. The high presence of water together with the cold and dry climate offer everything that is desirable for the production of these Loden fabrics. Loden-Frey was officially born and immediately enjoyed great success in 1870, especially among the German and Austrian nobility. Loden became a style leader and a reference point for European high society. A distribution network was developed that covers the entire continent from Europe to Asia. For the first time, retailers and shops around the world showcase the famous Made in Germany coats in their shop windows.

The building was destroyed during the Second World War and reopened in 1949.

In 1960, the Lodenfrey company employed 2,000 people and allowed the training of 60 apprentices every year. The company mainly focused on loden fabric and steadily developed it further, winning the gold medal for water-repellent loden at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
