Zappieri, Sanzio

THE ITALIAN TRADER WHO REPRESENTED THE BIGGEST FASHION COMPANIES

Sanzio Zappieri, born in 1936, was an Italian ready-to-wear fashion trader. He began working as a salesman at a very young age, and by the mid-1950s he already founded his own company in Turin.

In the 1960s he started dealing with his first important brands: Ballantyne, Brioni, and Zanella (Zanella owns the UFO jeans brand).

The 1970s saw the explosion of the fashion sector in Italy and Zappieri succeeded in obtaining the rights to represent Valentino, and Thierry Mugler, who was just entering the Italian market. Heopened its first Milanese showroom on Via della Spiga.

Zappieri launched in the 1980s Moschino throughout the world and added labels like Krizia, Blumarine, and Oliver by Valentino to his stable, followed by lines from Dior, Ritz Sadler, and, more recently, Donna Karan Signature, plus high street labels like Kookai, L’Altra Moda, and Liu-Jo.

ZAP FLAGSHIPSTORE

His latest venture has been the opening of a 1,000 square-meter multi-brand franchising store called Zap in Milan’s Galleria Passarella. The group is made up of various franchised companies, each with specific functions, and has about 120 employees. The annual turnover is about 103 million euros for about 1 million items. Moreover, the company has 8 showrooms in Italy and 10 elsewhere in Europe.

“STUDIO. COMUNICAZIONE”

Studio.Comunicazione, a public relations and advertising agency specialising in the fashion sector, was officially opened in 2000. Founded at the end of 1999 by Sanzio Zappieri, the agency offers public relations and advertising consultancy to companies already distributed by the Zappieri Group and to the Group itself. The agency’s main areas of activity are: communication strategies, press office activities, organisation of events and fashion shows, creation of promotional material and targeted advertising planning. In the same year the group became a member of Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.

PARTNERSHIP WITH FASHION BOX

In February 2009 Fashion Box, the company that owns the Replay, Replay&Sons and We Are Replay brands, announced the start of a new partnership with Gruppo Zappieri. The collaboration, concerning the distribution of the We Are Replay collections, includes an exclusive agreement for the Italian territory. It will be valid for five years, starting with the Autumn/Winter 2009/10 collection.

CURRENT SITUATION

The owner of the Zappieri Group passed away in 2014. However, this does not represent the end of the company, which has passed into the hands of Sanzio’s children. Elena is in charge of administration, Domenico is responsible for sales, and Giorgiana looks after the image and acquisition of the companies.
