Vignelli

Lella (1931) and Massimo (1931). Architects and designers. They designed unisex outfits with strict, spare lines, vaguely based on Maoist uniforms. They did so in the United States, in New York, where they have run a highly successful studio since 1971 which, among other things, designed all the signage for the subway system. After their studies (Lella in Venice and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Massimo in Milan and in Venice), they worked in Chicago and Milan. In 1981, the Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan held an anthological show of their projects.
