UNDERPANTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ALMOST A TABOO THAT TAKE ON MANY SHAPES AND COLOURS TO FOLLOW FASHION

In the 70s and 80s men who wore underwear seemed an “old fashion ruin” in the eyes of young women. This eliminated the possibility of romantic encounters from the start, it prevented any possible passion under ironic glances and barely restrained giggles. Briefs (garments that are worn and put on easily) dominated, they were essential, even in the most obsolete colours and patterns. Then boxers arrived, the modern version of underpants, of culottes.

Striped, chequered, Scottish, in the most various colours, coordinated or uncoordinated to the fullest with shirts and socks, these shorts, have been so successful that they are worn, as an alternative to briefs, also “over” tights and to be exhibited partly outside the “waist” line of the trousers which, for boys and girls, descend deeper and deeper below the navel. Even though, in 2003, David Beckham’s thong, the “Spice boy” and football star, raised a debate.

WOMEN’S UNDERWEAR

In the women’s field, knickers were put aside first by briefs and then by thongs. However “charmante” knickers reappeared in black satin and transparent lace, very much in the 30s style, or provocative in red silk, romantic in pastel colours, or in mesh for winter decorated with flowers, fruit, sun and moon in strass when they are not in pure cashmere. Real wardrobe jewels, to be overflowed out of jeans, to be shown or let glimpsed through transparent muslins, or slits in skirts; or to be worn as a “pantacourt” with high boots.

They were re-evaluated, almost impudent, no longer a means of intimate secret seduction but an item of clothing in sight or semi-visible. Knickers have had a further chance of revenge thanks to some more “avant-garde” stylists. Significantly, with French influences on the trend of underwear worn as outerwear. Outerwear even if, as always in fashion, the inspiration comes from very specific historical and costume references.
