Sorelle Gori, The Gori Sisters: a Turin tailor shop active in the inter-war and post-war periods

The sisters were important fashion designers in the Italian fashion world, founding a Turin tailor shop in the 1930s that was active in the inter-war and post-war periods and were renowned for their innovative and distinctive style of design, with fashion creations that were considered one of the icons of Italian fashion of the time. Along with Palmer’s Tailors in Milan and Roma’s Tailors in Turin, it was the most enthusiastic and courageous tailor shop since 1931. The pair of fashion designers focus on both traditional craftsmanship and avant-garde innovation in their designs. Their work often blends traditional Italian craftsmanship with fashion trends, revealing a unique style and taste.

Four years before the founding of Ente Nazionale della Moda, with their dictatorial precepts of buying models and canvases from the French court in Paris, the designs were full of exquisite hand-craftsmanship and noble materials, popular with the high society of the time, which issued invitations to design fashions. In 1931, the sisters presented their exclusive creations of evening dresses. Six years later, as part of a ball organized by the Mayor of Turin at the Palazzo Madama in honor of the country’s fashion, they won the trophy for the most representative Italian fashion. It was a grand evening gown of black tulle and large bundles of black horsehair, as Natalia Aspesi describes it in Rizzoli ’82 (Luxury and).

The fashion house enjoyed a strong reputation in Turin and attracted a clientele from Italian and international high society. Their success also set an example for the Italian fashion industry, becoming one of the leading figures in fashion at the time. And their creations are considered treasures in the history of Italian fashion. Their contribution to the Italian fashion industry is widely recognised and their style and creativity have influenced many subsequent designers and fashion houses.
