The Birth of the Brand

Revlon is an American cosmetics company founded by brothers Charles and Joseph Revson with their friend Charles Lachman (the L in Revlon).

They made their market debut in 1932 with a series of nail polishes, created in a room on 44th Street in Manhattan: a hymn to colour as a reaction to the grey years of the Great Depression. Then came a line of matching lipsticks and nail polishes – the first in history – which introduced an important innovation: the date of manufacture on the packaging.

Firsts in the world of Makeup

Always at the forefront of research, Revlon has many firsts in both skincare and make-up. During the Second World War years, it launched a makeup collection that made history with its bright, sexy colours (Fatal Apple, Ultra Violet, Sheer Dynamite). In 1951, she developed the first creamy solid foundation, then offered young women an oil-free line and in 1958 she obtained the first stable emulsion in a foundation.

Bold Marketing

In the 1960s, the brand became synonymous with bold advertising and advanced marketing. The Wordly Young Innocents make-up was born: fresh, youthful shades embodied in the childlike beauty of Joan Shrimpton. But it was also the time of the famous Blush-on, a blusher with a large brush that spread the use of this accessory to apply colour to the face.

Charlie Perfume and Anti Ageing

Later, in 1972, the Charlie perfume phenomenon exploded, along with the invention of a stable and soluble form of collagen, which initiated a new generation of skincare products. In the 1980s, the cosmetics company tackled the problems of photo-ageing and created the innovative Age-less.

Present in more than 175 countries, Revlon now has 27 distribution structures and is one of the world leaders in its field. Among its latest successful creations is Colorstay Lipcolour, the first kiss-proof lipstick, the progenitor of an entire line of anti-ageing make-up, whose image has been entrusted to the famous faces of Cindy Crawford, Melanie Griffith and Salma Hayek.
