Nigo

Nigo, Japanese designer. An eclectic and rather mysterious character, designer, journalist, and musician. Very little is known regarding his true name, age, or training. A friend of Jun Takahashi, whom he met in 1988 at the Bunka Fashion College, the two collaborated on the series of Nowhere T-“shirts and the Undercover line.

In 1993, with a limited series of T-“shirts freely inspired by the film The Planet of the Apes, he launched the brand A Bathing Ape, often abbreviated to Bape, which soon became famous and was snatched up by the youth of Tokyo and New York. The line, at the beginning only comprising clothing and accessories, was extended to cover various other elements, from interior design to furniture, to games.

His fashion is orientated towards comfort, practicality, and simplicity. It is very much focused towards the world of youth, its legends and its metamorphoses. Among other activities, Nigo designed a camouflage can for Pepsi Cola in 2000, and opened a café. He also opened a beauty salon and an art gallery, confirming the eclecticism that has made his fortune.

In 2003, he designed the BBC (Billionaire Boys Club) line with rapper Pharrell Williams, echoing the rapper look that has been so popular in street culture worldwide in recent years.
