Museum at the FIT
Museum at the FIT is located in New York, USA. The museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology was founded in 1967 as a collection to support the courses offered by the institute. Today it boasts the largest collection of clothing and fabrics in the world. Open to the public, as well as to scholars, it offers temporary exhibitions, consultable archives and an educational path to understand the history of fashion. The collection, dating from the 18th century to the end of the 20th, is above all rich in 20th century brands. There are also men’s clothes, children’s clothes, sportswear and uniforms. There are more than 20 thousand accessories.
Equally important is the collection of fabrics with around 30 thousand examples from the 17th century to today of all origins and types. 250 thousand samples of fabrics are cataloged and can be lent to members for short periods. The idea of a large textile archive that includes pieces of fabric from which visitors can cut a remnant is innovative. A vast collection documents the history and protagonists of fashion photography.
