The Montgomery, or duffle coat, is a wool jacket complete with a hood, long down to the hips or knees. It closes with olive-shaped rope frogs which were intended to be inserted into eyelets made of a rope or leather loop. Made in its most classic version with variously colored camel hair fabric or with other very heavy material. It was originally worn by men of the British Navy.
It owes its name to the English general Bernard Law Montgomery, winner of the battle of El Alamein, who habitually wore it over his military uniform during the Second World War. Its success began at the end of the conflict, when the surplus models were put up for sale to the public. The duffle coat therefore becomes an essential (but above all comfortable) item of men’s and women’s wardrobes, especially suited to entire generations of high school and university students of the 40s and 50s. Forty years later it had a comeback. It suits the mountains, the winter disco, summer trips to Greenland or the South Pole. But the colors are new: burgundy, forest green, navy blue.
