Matthew Williams, American stylist, founder of 1017 Alyx 9SM and creative director of Givenchy since 2020

Matthew Williams was born in Illinois in 1985. Since he was a teenager he has been interested in the world of sport and urban culture, frequenting Californian clubs and participating in DJ sets his friends. He made his debut in self-taught fashion and success came at the age of 21, when he was noticed by Kanye West who commissioned him a dress to wear at the 2007 Grammy Awards. For the American rapper he will also design the dress for his wedding with Kim Kardashian. Williams immediately achieved great success and collaborated with many celebrities. In 2013 he founded the men’s streetwear brand Been Trill, a collective that included creative directors such as Heron Preston and Virgil Abloh.

In 2015, he decided to start his own business and founded the brand 107 Alyx 9SM together with Luca Benini. Together, they create luxe, sharp-edged clothes with a nod to street culture. Although the brand focused on womenswear for the first few seasons, in 2017 Williams expanded the brand portfolio with menswear. He collaborates with Alexander McQueen, Nike, Vans, Dior Mackintosh and also signs a capsule for Moncler.

In 2016, he was among the finalists of the LVMH prize. In June 2020, Williams was appointed creative director of Givenchy taking over from Claire Waight Keller. Williams continues to design 107 Alyx 9SM.
